Build communities where students and educators thrive

ECIT for special education and clinical populations is a professional development program for educational staff working with students with disabilities.  Our model of ECIT Sped is adapted from  Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence based program for children with disruptive behavior problems.

ECIT Sped
Program Overview

ECIT Sped is a two phase training, with coaching all along the way.

Phase One

School staff learn specific strategies to focus on the positive skills students are showing, make communication more clear, and increase connections with students through target language. Staff learn skills to apply with students, as well as behaviors to avoid.

Phase Two

Educators learn strategies to increase consistent responding, establish boundaries and limits with students, and follow through on giving directions. The focus of phase two is to manage difficult behaviors within the classroom, rather than over-relying on outside behavior teams or support staff.

ECIT Sped doesn’t replace the great things already happening- it helps it all work better.

Built for Special Education

Special Education staff often sit in professional development sessions thinking to themselves, “None of this applies to my students.” PD content is often minimally applicable, or requires a lot of work for staff to adapt. ECIT Sped provides flexible, time tested strategies that work for students across a continuum of disability category, level of language, and age.

Skill Attainment with Support

ECIT Sped uses a “bug in the ear” live coaching model that is individualized and implemented in the classroom environment with students. This approach allows for in the moment adaptation of skills, advice from the coach, and support when things get weird! In Special Education, we know there is never a dull moment!

Positive school and classroom culture

ECIT Sped recognizes that the people who make the most difference for kids are the ones working with them on a daily basis- special education staff and related service providers- are the primary agents in guiding change.

Goals for Staff and Students

ECIT Sped works to improve teacher confidence, reduce burnout, and provide more enjoyment throughout the day. Students increase their prosocial skills while decreasing target behaviors. ECIT Sped makes all our best practice instructional strategies reach  maximum potential.
